Greatest Scammers of Data Recovery?

About a year or two ago, I had the misfortune of hearing a sound some of us might know all know too well: the infamous " click of death" emitting from my WD Passport. I desperately mailed out my platter-scored drive which was doomed from the start.

Over the ensuing year and a half I sent out the drive to in regards to a dozen different companies, and I quickly became used to the " unrecoverable" emails. I ran the range of customer experiences along the way, ranging from completely transparent, return-cost-only companies (i. e. $20 for Kroll Ontrack, $32 for Gillware, $0 regarding Blizzard, $0 for Rossmann) to the extremely marketing/sales-heavy, pseudo-fronts (i. e. $240 for SalvageData)–Happy to elaborate more on my SalvageData experience, but it' s easily the most disingenuous company I' ve ever had the displeasure of dealing with.

The drive was eventually lost by in the mail during the Summer while being sent back from Ontrack, but my awful encounter with the latter of the aforementioned organization types made me wonder: provides anyone had any similarly sleazy DR experiences they' d love to share? Might prevent others from making the same mistakes I did.
