Expansion drive not recognised by Windows

Hi. I’ve got a Seagate 1TB portable expansion drive. To the best of my knowledge it’s not been dropped or kicked or anything, but it’s no longer being recognised in Windows Explorer. The light on the hard drive comes on, the PC makes a little beepy noise to say something’s connected but that’s it. Usually you can feel the drive kick into gear when it connects but nothing now. The drive is almost full and has been working with no problems for over a year. Nothing on there is essential but if I could get it back that would be handy.

A bit of googling has got me to a point where I’m in disk management and that recognises that something is connected but I’m being asked to initialise it. This is the point were any help I’m getting online wants me to buy and download some software, something I’m always wary of. I’m happy to pay if it’s legit and has a chance of success, I guess I just want to make sure this is the right way to go about it.

Two other things, I’m a complete novice when it comes to stuff like this so it’s entirely possible any answers I get will go over my head. Also, my PC is ancient, it’s from 2009 and still on Windows 7. It does what I need which is basically typing or listening to music but how it will fare with trying to fix this, if possible, I have no idea.

Thanks in advance!
