I'm a computer repair business in the US. I replace so many hard disks, sometimes I think I'm a hard disk replacement business. I have a lawyer in the family who asked me how I wipe the old drives, in the context of privacy/identity lawsuits. I told them I pop them into my Startech dock and press erase.
This got me thinking, is that a "secure" wipe? What constitutes a "secure" wipe? Is the wipe secure enough to prevent recovery efforts? Should I be physically destroying the drives after wiping?
From a professional data-recovery standpoint, what procedure would be considered adequate when destroying customer drives and would that procedure hold up in court if ever there were such and issue?
