Tried moving a folder with about 10GB of files in it from one external drive to another external drive, the transfer processed instantly but files aren’t on either device now. Any chance they exist on the original drive still?

I tried transferring a folder (about 10 gigs) from one external drive to another external drive. I used the "move" action vs copy. The windows file transfer progress indicator finished immediately (should have taken about 10 minutes or so) and the folder name exists in the new hard drive but the files within the folder aren't there, and the folder in the old drive is no longer there. Are the files gone? Can someone explain what happened? The files aren't super important, but I'd love to know what happened so I can prevent it in the future or recover them if they are more important files. Should I always copy to new destination and then delete from old after it's successful?
